Original:
I have two systems that were moved from an NIS environment a non-NIS environment. When the systems were brought up in the new environment, they got in a loop with the following message.
rpc.lockd cannot contact status monitor
So I went back and commented out the call to rpc.lockd in the rpc.local file. The systems at this time boot all the way through.
But now, ping, telnet, ftp etc. don't work. "Network Is Unreachable" is when ping/telnet is executed.
Can someone shed some light on what is happening or where to start probing for possible solutions ?
OS = 4.1.4
Solutions:
1. run sys_unconfig. This command will unconfig your system by (a) rm /etc/hosts (b) rm /etc/hostname.??[0-9] (c) rm /etc/defaultdomain (d) rm /usr/lib/zoneinfo/localtime (d) diasable NIS
2. delete /etc/defaultdomain. This will prevent NIS from starting up.
3. use ifconfig and netstat -nr
4. delete /etc/sm and /etc/sm.bak. sm is the status minitor for all the hostnames existing in the directories lockd keep on trying and give s error.
In my case, I only need to stop NIS. I deleted /etc/defaultdomain from the system and that solved the problem.
