Thanks to the following for their accurate assessment of my nslookup
problem.

phil@compass.sc.ti.com (Phil Meyer)
Barry Margolin <barmar@bbnplanet.com>
Dave Mitchell <D.Mitchell@dcs.shef.ac.uk>
Matus Uhlar <uhlar@ccduck.ke.sanet.sk>
gdmr@dcs.ed.ac.uk (George Ross)
"Andy Gay (3272)" <andy@rdl.co.uk>

Turns out that the campus DNS had updated to bind 4.9.3 which no
longer supports SunOS 4.1/4.1.1 nslookup which requires a reverse
query operation. Compiling the version which comes with the bind-4.9.3
distribution got me a new nslookup quickly.

No one was able to offer a reason for ping/ftp/telnet no longer
working to hosts off the NIS map i.e. requiring DNS access. I found
that installing the libc jumbo patch made the NIS/DNS combo work again
as it did for five years prior to last week. No idea why. Any takers?
