the answer is:

you need to do a make on the netid map,
or better yet just do:
cd /var/yp
make

this fixed the problem. just a note, you may have to
log out and back in for the user to see the new group
when thet run groups.
people also suggested:
Have you had the user run "newgrp" from the original login.
