     Hello,
thanks to all who responded to my query. The answer is that they can
be repaired. Some (all?) of these monitors do have internal brightness
and contrast controls and there is a good chance you can brighten the
monitor yourself (or have someone else do this cheaply). Below is the
procedure I used to brighten my 17 inch monitor [Sun model
365-1094-01]. I do not guarantee this to work on any monitor but mine
(the one sitting on my desk). Oh - by the way - I have absolutely no
previous experience or knowledge about repairing or adjusting
monitors.

   1) Open up the monitor case (four screws in the back). Case
      slips out easily.

   2) There is a wire mesh surrounding the electronics. Two holes have
been punched into the wire mesh at the top. Straight down (under)
these holes are two screws on the back plate of the CRT tube. One
of these screws/knobs is brightness (the right one when looking
at the back of the monitor [I think]) the other is contrast.
I believe (but I am not sure) that these two screws/knobs are in
the same general area where the danger of electrical shock is the
      greatest.

   3) With a screwdriver turn these knobs until brightness and contrast
is satisfactory. Sometimes the monitors cannot be adjusted
anymore (they are already at max brightness and contrast).

   4) Close monitor case.

Some people say these adjustments don't last long.

Hope this helps!

   - Henrik
