SUMMARY: format.dat entry for ST410800N

From: Ricardo J Ruiz (rruiz@Census.GOV)

o The entry is available in the format.dat file maintained at ra.mcs.anl.gov
in the directory /sun-managers. I was confused by the ctrl=MD21 setting
since my systems are running under SunOS v4.1.3. I did not know that
all I had to do was replace MD21 with SCSI in both the disk_type and
partition entries.

# WARNING!!
# Do NOT low-level format Elite 9!
# The format program will time out during format, making the drive
# unusable! For Solaris 2.3, patch 101788-01 will fix this problem.
#
disk_type = "Seagate ST410800N Elite 9" \
        : ctlr = SCSI : fmt_time = 4 \
        : ncyl = 6087 : acyl = 2 : pcyl = 6089 : nhead = 27 \
        : nsect = 108 : rpm = 5400 : bpt = 55300

partition = "Seagate ST410800N Elite 9" \
        : disk = "Seagate ST410800N Elite 9" : ctlr = SCSI \
        : c = 0, 17749692

o If you want to reformat the drive, you must also edit the file
/sys/scsi/targets/sddef.h file to change the SD_FMT_TIME to 240*60.
Otherwise, formatting the 9GB stops after 2 hours of formatting which
won't be enough to format the whole disk.

  # vi /sys/scsi/targets/sddef.h
    (search for SD_FMT_TIME and change 120*60 to 240*60)

    #define SD_FMT_TIME 240*60

And after you have put the above entries into /etc/format.dat, rebuild
your kernel.

o Seagate has a home page at http://seagate.com if anyone is interested.

Thanks to all the people that replied to my original message,
