John,

    It sounds like the jumper settings on the tape drive are not
set properly. This isn't described very well in the HP documentation
at all.
    You will need to set the jumpers on the bottom side of the
tape drive to:

MRS off = 11111000
MRS on = 11111001

    MRS is the Media Recogniation system which allows the drive
to identify DDS1 and DDS2 tapes.

Hope this helps!

High John

Maybe yout try this:

Entry in /usr/kvm/sys/scsi/targets/st_conf.c:

/* HP DAT HPC1533A */ { "HPC1533A", 14, "HP C1533A", ST_TYPE_EXABYTE, 1024, (ST_VARIABLE | ST_BSF | ST_BSR | ST_KNOWS_EOD), 5000, 5000, { 0x00, 0x00, 0x00, 0x00}, { 0, 0, 0, 0 } },

Don't forget to generate a new Kernel. Reboot please with the new Kernel.

Good Luck

The jumper settings corrected our problem, however thanks to all those who replied.
