Hello Managers;
Many thanks to all who replied. The short answer is that PCNFSpro provides only client services
and does not provide server NFS support. It seemed strange to me that a product named
ÿÿN*s‚-
” does not fully support NFS.
I was advised of two commercial packages and two freeware packages sos and SAMBA, which
uses the native WFW 3.11’s networking. For the commercial packages, it seems that SolarNet
PC-Admin provides NFS client services, but it does not come with PCNFSpro; and Legato's
Networker backup solution was also another possibility, if backup was the only concern.
As I’m looking for a solution that I can install for my remote industrial customers, who will be
looking for simplified software support (as they have limited administrator abilities), I’ll probably
have to go with SolarNet PC-Admin - and leave in place a support contract with Sun. If it were
for my use only, I would have picked SAMBA, as I saw the SAMBA questions and answers that
were posted a few weeks ago.

I believe you need the Samba package (freeware). It allows unix
machines to talk to the WFW type machines and vise versa. I don't use it
here but I have had a quick look at it and have heard good reports.

PC-NFSpro does not currently include NFS server support, which is what you'd need to accomplish this. The best thing you could do is to enable the ftp daemon on the PC and use ftp from the Sun to retrieve the files you wish to backup, but that's probably not a great solution. You might also investigate a solution like Legato's Networker backup solution; we include the client software with SolarNet PC-Admin, but I don't think it comes with PC-NFSpro.

An alternative is to go with SAMBA; this has the considerable advantage of using the native MS-Windows networking (no big deal for the Unix box) rather than making some poor PC speak NFS.
Also; I don't believe PCNFSpro HAS an NFS server built in. It has a client of course.

I don't see how this can work since PCNFS alone does not provide the multitasking environment to support this.

The problem is that the PC doesn't act as an NFS server - I'm not sure that PCNFSpro ever does. Heck - we can't even get the silly NT box we have to use to do it right yet...

I'm afraid the PC-NFS is only the client side of NFS. You can mount, but you cannot export filesystems.

The original PC-NFS had only client capability, not server, and I suspect that PCNFSpro may be the same way. I am aware of three possible solutions:
* A program called soss (ask archie), which runs under DOS and makes the PC into a dedicated NFS server. This might be OK for backups, when you'd probably just as soon not have anything else running on the PC anyway.
* Chameleon, from NetManage, which is a Windows DLL file. I am not totally sure that it provides NFS server functionality, but I seem to remember that it does.
* Windows 95 has peer-to-peer networking built in. I presume this

There are some other Windows TCP products which do have, but their names escape me I'm afraid. There is a public domain product available called, AFAIR, SOS (for Son of Sam - don't ask me !) which makes a PC into an NFS server - maybe that might be of some use to you.

You need to get the public domain program "SAMBA" running on your Solaris machine - it let's you see WFW resources .... I'm not sure if you can do this with PC-NFS ?
