Thanks for the prolific and verbose reply to my query. I feel as though
I must be the only sun manager in the world who didn't realize that
Solaris requires twice as much core as old SunOS. There were a couple
ME-TOOs but a HUGE number of GET MORE MEMORY FOOL relpies (about 40).
Apparently Sun recommends at least 24Mb for Solaris. Most all replies
suggested getting at least 32Mb of core. In regard to the question
"Is Solaris faster or slower than SunOS?"... apparently the first few
revs of Solaris (2.0, 2.1, and 2.2) were quite slow and unstable but
by rev 2.4, it's considered as fast or faster than SunOS, IF YOU HAVE
ENOUGH MEMORY! Many people reported running Solaris 2.4 on older
machines like my ELC and SS1's and were very happy with performance.
All those people had at least 32Mbtyes core.
MORAL OF THE STORY: If you're planning on jumping into the OS upgrade
of your site, do a ram inventory first to make sure all your machines
are up to 32Mb. Don't wait until after the upgrades to go shopping
for memory or you'll have some very unhappy people.
Forgive me for not crediting all the replies to this summary. There
were just so many. As usual, this list proves to be worth far more than
any Sun support money can buy.
