SUMMARY: Adding a 5th disk (2.3 GB) the 4/330

Sorry for the late summary. The general consensus was modify the entry for
the second scsi tape drive in the config file of the kernel to a scsi disk
and remake the kernel. Also the new FAST SCSI-2 disks should work with the
older VME Bus SCSI I card when connected using a D50 to micro-D50 cable.
As I am running SunOS 4.1.1, I may have to upgrade to SunOS 4.1.3. Repartition
the disk into two smaller partitions (SunOS 4.1.3 supports only 2 GB per
partition). Other suggestion was I upgrade to Solaris 2.4, then I do not
need to remake the kernel.

I still have to try it out. I am waiting for the new disk to come in.

The Procedure:

1) edit the /usr/sys/sun4/conf/SYSTEMNAME file

tape st1 at sm0 drive 050 flags 1
disk sd3 at sm0 drive 050 flags 1

hash out the original sd3 entry:
#disk sd3 at sm0 drive 011 flags 0

2) Save your current kernel in case it fails. Rebuild the new kernel. Connect the
disk and go.

Thanks to all who replied.

My original question was:

Dear Sun-Managers,

I have two SparcServers 4/330 (A and B) with the following configurations

2 internal disk drives (669 MB each)
2 external disk drives (Two 669 MB on 1 ESM)
1 1/4" Tape Drive (Desktop Storage Pack)
1 Sun CDROM (Desktop Storage Pack)

2 internal disk drives (669 MB)
2 external disk drives (Two 669 MB on two ESMs)
1 2.3 GB 8mm Tape drive (On one of the above ESMs)
1 Sun CDROM (Desktop Storage Pack)

Both have 40 MB RAM and run SunOS 4.1 2.

I contacted Sun for information on adding a 2.3 GB disk drive to
the SparcServer 4/330. I was told that as I already have 4 disk drives
on it: I am max-ed out. I can only have 4 DDs + 2 TDs + 1 CDROM.
Also, they do not make peripherals for the old SCSI bus (SCSI I)
which is on the SparcServer 4/330. In addition, as 4/330
does not have a SBus and Sun no longer makes VME bus SCSI cards,
I cannot add a SCSI bus card to the system.

My only options according to Sun are:

1) to upgrade the SparcServer 330 to a SparcServer 1000 or SparcServer 20.

2) or get a VME bus SCSI card from some other vendor and get a cable
which goes from old SCSI port to a micro-miniature SCSI port
on the new disk drives and then connect the new disk drive.
There may be a speed mismatch because of this. The disk drives
work at 10 Mbps and the VME SCSI board works at 4 Mbps. There
   may be compatibility problems.

3) or get a VME bus SCSI card and a SCSI disk drive from the used market
or some other vendor and install it in the 4/330.

Could you give some suggestions?
