The "solution" is a bit too long and involved so...
The helpful hints I learned when installing ppp-2.1.2 on a 630mp running
SunOS 4.1.3_U1 - My testing was almost totally done using Trumpet Winsock
2.0b on a PC:
1)Get ftp://sunsolve1.sun.com/pub/patches/101621-02.tar.Z
*this solved alot of problems!

2)Check gettytab for

^^ ^^^^^^^^^^ *when setting things up for 8 bit, hardware flow
control. No value and it defaults to 7 bit...
3)Make the following changes to modem settings
(examples given for USR Sportster 14.4K-configured for hardware flow control)
Q1- Quiet mode (no result codes)
V1- Verbal codes
&H1- Hardware flow control (CTS)
&I0- Software flow control disabled
&R2- Recieved Data to computer only on RTS
(BTW I later found out that disabling Data Compression increased transfer
rates a bit)
