#### Here is the original question:

Hi
We have a SparcStation LX running Solaris 2.3 and we just got the Solaris 2.3 Revision A of August, 1994. The question is how can I install this version without destroying any information and keeping the applications already installed.

#### I received two approaches to the solution of this problem

#### Approach 1

From: Jane.Medefesser@Eng.Sun.COM (Jane Medefesser)

When installing your new OS, select the "upgrade" option instead
of the "initial" option. When laying out your filesystems, don't
change the disk partitions and preserve your data. (note: you can't
preserve root or /usr though...)

From: asargusi@sbrsim.ed.dreo.dnd.ca (Ayrton Sargusingh)

That is YOUR doing. It is very important to avoid installing applications
in /usr or any other system directory. That is why people create local
partitions and mount them under /usr creating a /usr/local directory. An
install will not touch /usr/local so all your applications will be intact.
Some manufactures such as APC (UPS manufacturers) force users to install
their application under /usr/lib. Just document those for future
reference.

You should be able to do a sunupgrade, but I still suggest you print
out your configuration files in case the upgrade overwrites those.

#### Approach 2

From: szh@zcon.com (Syed Zaeem Hosain)

I would suggest waiting for the 2.4 media instead. It has been released
and it on its way to many people right now.

From: Juergen Peus <grobi@uni-paderborn.de>

I recommend not installing the new version (wait for 2.4 !!). This new
Revision A of August, 1994 does not bring anything that can't be added
with patches (an adding patches works without destroying any information and
keeping the applications already installed). Check out the list of the
patches recommended by sun for Solaris 2.3:
