I received these suggestions:

1. Increase the number pty's.

2. Check parameters in /etc/inetd.conf.

3. Apply Patch 100178-09
    Patch-ID# 100178-09
Synopsis: SunOS 4.1.1;4.1.2;4.1.3: inetd "broken server detection" breaks
    on fast machines

Unfortunately, the inetd hangs about once a month so it will
be while before I know if any of the above fix the problem.

One other sun-manager also saw this problem.
