Thanks to all who responded (very quickly!).

The original problem was not being able to get root access on remote systems to
do backups under Solaris 2.3.

The answer is that you must comment out the CONSOLE variable in the file:
/etc/default/login.

This did the trick, no reboot was necessary. Of course you still have to set
up the /etc/hosts.equiv file or .rhosts.
