Original Post
=============

Just installed a new SPARCstation 5 with internal floppy and internal
Sun2CD drive and loaded it with SunOS 4.1.3_U1 (Solaris 1.1.1 B).

When I try to do anything with audio, I get:

 demo/SOUND : myhost 4:49pm > ./play -v 38 sounds/rooster.au
./play: error opening /dev/audio: No such device
 demo/SOUND : myhost 4:49pm >

Yet an ls -l of /dev/aud* shows:

 crw-rw-rw- 1 root 69, 0 Oct 25 13:55 /dev/audio
 crw-rw-rw- 1 root 69, 1 Oct 25 13:55 /dev/audioctl

I have no speaker box attached, and I did hook the Sun2CD's audio
cable up. Anyone have any suggestions?

 I'll post a summary. E-mail replies direct.

Solution Summary
================

Apply the ``ms2'' patch from the Solaris 1.1.1 B CD as such:

   1. mount -t hsfs -r /dev/sr0 /cdrom
   2. cd /cdrom/patches/sun*
   3. cp * /usr/etc/install/tar/patches
   4. umount /cdrom
   5. /usr/etc/extract_patch
   6. Answer questions. When it asks for the patch name, type: m2

Just install the patch named -ms2. It's available on the same
CD as the OS.

Hello Jeff,

look out for Sun Patch #101508-06. Maybe this will be the solution.

CU, Dirk.

The speakerbox IS the audio device. If it is not connected at boot time
then the machine thinks that the audio device doesnt exist. The entry
in /dev/audio is simply an interface to the audio device driver and
will always be there (unless someone rm's it) even if the Speakerbox
is not connected.

The speakerbox contains all the hardware for processing sound. Unlike the
SS1/SS2 etc. the DAC/ADC hardware is not inside the pizza box.

Hope that helps.

Sounds like you didn't install the -ms2 patch, or, like me, you installed the
patch and then edited out the last line of the kernel config file
and lost the entry for the sound device.

Re: my last message...

Of course, now that I think about it...

I think I might be wrong about the external speakerbox on the SS5...

I know that is the way it is on the SS10, but havent worked with the ss5 much.

Sorry.
