I received 2 replies
One (Chuck Foley) said that
" I believe the st.conf feature of allowing "customer" definitions started
with Solaris 2.3."
and the other (Paulo Licio de Geus) said he had no problem in using WangDAT
4mm tape drive under Solaris 2.2 and 2.3 without any change to the
configuration. He uses the drive as /dev/rmt/0cn for data compression all the
time.
The Sony 4mm drive I am using is hooked to the Sparc 2 running Solaris2.2.
It does work but at a very slow speed.
So I upgrade to Harware 5/94 Solaris 2.3 with Maintenance Supplement 1 as
suggested by Chuck Foley and modify the /kernel/drv/st.conf as
..
name="st" class="scsi"
target=4,luno=0;
tape-config-list =
"SONY SDT-200", "SONY 4mm DAT", "magic-data"
magic-data = 1,0x34,1024,0x1639,4,0,0x8c,0x8c,0x8c,3;
..
Reboot the machine with boot -r
Test the drive with
tar cvf /dev/rmt/1l test.file
it comes up with
st4: Fixed record length (512 bytes/block)
and it is still very slow (300KB in 3 minutes or 3MB in 30 minutes).
So something is still wrong. According to the Sony manual, it is
compatible with the HP 4mm DAT drive. If someone has the right entry for
the HP or the Sony, I would appreciate it.
