SUMMARY: Death of shell with Solaris 2.3

Original question:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

When running "/bin/sh" on Solaris 2.3 (on a SPARCclassic), users have
experienced the shell dying on simple commands such as cd or pwd.

One such sequence of events is:
        pwd
        (start process)
        <ctrl>-c the process
        cd /usr/somewhere
        cd include
pwd ----- shell dies here, dumps core in directory ~/include

One common denominator seems to be that the directories being cd'd to are
symbolically linked to others.
