I received a number of replies and me-toos.

hedstrom@a34-temp2 suggested stopping and restarting vold and/or WorkMan
from time to time. I did. I couldn't see any reduction in the incidence
of the problem.

Peter.Samuel@nms.otc.com.au has seen this message when he has physically
removed the CDrom drive from the daisy chain (not relevant to my problem).

My SCSI chain was not terminated, lacoursj@uprc.com suggested that a
proper terminator might help so I added one and lo and behold - it didn't.

steve@gec-epl.co.uk suggested power cycling the CDrom. I did and it worked.
Thanks steve.

However I still don't know why the problem occurs anyone got any ideas?
