Hello,
First, thanks for all the answers.
My original question was can a 4mm dat drive work on a Solaris 1.x
system. The answer is yes. Summary of some answers are below:

Ideally you should get the fixes for the file /sys/scsi/targets/st_conf.c from
your dat vendor.
I started off and used our dat drive with no modifications to the kernel for qu
ite a while, it was ok, and the tapes that I wrote then are still readable.

SunOS 4.1.3_U1 has SUN 5.0GB 4mm DAT drive support included.

Sure. We've got a HP 35480A running under 4.1.2. It seems to be the most
common DAT Hardware, and if you change the Kernel accordingly, it runs
just fine.

>From DEC we support 4mm tapes devices on Solaris 1.x (4.1.3). The
part number is SWXTA. It supports both compression and noncompressed
tapes with a capacity ranging from 1.2-4 GB depending on the
tape length used and a compression ratio of 2:1.

I hooked up a Wangtek dat to our 4/330 running 4.1.3, and it works fine for
tar (I haven't tried anything else) with no special setup or anything. This
is the model that puts 4 GB on a tape (has built-in compression). However,
another Wangtek without the compression - 2 GB per tape - is not recognized
as a SCSI device. Sorry I don't have the model numbers at the moment.

The Sun 4mm DAT Drive is now supported under Solaris 1.1.1 (the
version that combined 1.1A and 1.1C).

We have several H/P 35470A DAT drives hooked to Sparc Classic and
Sparc 10/30 machines. The Classics run SunOS 4.1.3c (Solaris 1.1.1) and
the 10/30 hosts run 4.1.3 (Solaris 1.1). I've found that setting switches
6, 7, & 8 to the 'off' position works well for these drives.
