first, many thanks for replying to my question to:

Tim further added the output from the 'help' command which I leave out
here; anybody interested can send a request to np-archive@Sun.COM with
the body of the message containing a line starting with help. The server
does understand four commands: help, index, send and path. Please note:
the file server does not respond to requests from users named "root",
"system", "daemon", or "mailer." This is to prevent mail loops.

One important point was made by Brett M Hogden; he wrote:

One other way around the HANDLER_INTERFACE in the .param file is to
rename the untar'ed file from "DeskJet500C" to "djc" prior running the
add_np_printer script.

I was able to successfully install the "DeskJet500C.handlerpackage" on
an IPX running SunOS 4.1.3; the printer has been connected thru the
parallel port of the Video-Sbus-card. Newsprint Revision was 2.0C.

The driver does not work, as far as I can see, under SunOS 4.1.2 even if
the Newsprint Release 2.0C is used; it complains on a missing
"libspool.so.1" (although no such file exists in the SunOS 4.1.3 machine
the driver successfully runs on). As my basic problem is solved I have
no plans to chase this problem further.

As I have no Newsprint Release 2.1 around I was not able to test wether
the driver would/could run with this newer version of Newsprint.
