Thanks to Jeffrey J. Simon (jjs@library.att.com) the mistery is solved!
I happened to have a ".hushlogin" in my home directory. I vaguely
remember placing it there, maybe when I was trying to figure out something
else or just playing. There is no man page for hushlogin.
