Answer:
Get `ofiles'. Better still, get `lsof'. Use in place of `fuser' to find
the processes accessing the partition. Can be found using archie.
Comments:
"Mike Rafferty" <miker@il.us.swissbank.com> claimed that I don't need to
umount before I dump.
baumann@proton.llumc.edu (Michael Baumann) suggested that my problem was
more in how to do a safe backup and to check out Backup-Copilot.
"LDC - Luis E. Mun~oz" <lem@usb.ve> suggested I use `lsof'.
He advised that hard locks on the filesystem cause trouble.
glenn@uniq.com.au (Glenn Satchell) also suggested `lsof'.
I received some other email asking to know the results, but I can't
find it to email the individuals. Sorry guys. This is all you get...
Apologies, too, for the delay in posting the summary.
Finally, I am somewhat embarrassed to discover that something similar
to my question has been asked before on this list and that I could have
found the summaries in the archive via gopher/WWW/wais had I checked
carefully enough.
