Thanks to all those who responded.
Everybody pointed to the /etc/nsswitch.conf file. I tried all possible
combinations of files and nisplus, and it still didn't work.
In shear frustration I changed to field separator from a TAB to a SPACE in
the automount tables and Bob's your uncle it started working.
% niscat auto_master
/home auto_home -intr
% niscat auto_home
aa aaserv:/home/aa
bb bbserv:/home/bb
What's the story, is this a feature?

:-) Hi Unix Dude[ttes]
:-)
:-) I am trying to get automount to work with NIS+ automount tables.
:-)
:-) It works fine when I use local files, but when trying to convert to NIS+
:-) tables it completely loses the plot.
:-)
:-) Here we go:
:-)
:-) 1) /etc/nsswitch.conf:
:-) automount: nisplus files
:-)
:-) 2) niscat auto_master:
:-) /home auto_home -intr
:-)
:-) 3) niscat auto_home
:-) aa aaserv:/home/aa
:-) bb bbserv:/home/bb
:-)
:-) 4) plain vanilla /etc/init.d/nfs.client
:-) /usr/lib/nfs/automount > /dev/console 2>&1
:-)
:-)
:-) I would except automount to read the /etc/nsswitch.conf file, realise it's
:-) going to use NIS+ then reads the auto_master NIS+ table. I don't want
:-) automount to read the local files first, then look at NIS+ tables.
:-)
:-) % cd /home/aa
:-) /home/aa: No such file or directory
:-)
:-) Is there something really difficult (or most probably easy) that I am missing?
:-)
:-) Many Thanks
