Howdy -
This summary will discuss many common problems and solutions that
respondents have mentioned in the last three weeks to my original
posting. I thank everyone who wrote to me in regards to my problem of
corrupted directories on the M2654SA. In particular, the
tech-representative from Fujitsu Corp was extremely interested and
responsive during our email correspondence. Ok, here goes.
NOTE: All those who responded with problems and/or solutions that are
discussed in this article will not be identified by name or email
address (except Fujitsu Corp.-- whose help was outstanding; and Fast
Access -- they have created an installation guide for Sparcs). I
ACCEPT NO RESPONSIBILITY FOR SPELLING OR INSTRUCTIONAL ERRATA OR
ERRATA DUE TO MISCOMMUNICATION/MISINTERPRETATION.
FIRST: PARTIAL ORIGINAL POSTING FROM DWARD
I am trying to set up a Sparc10 with an external Fujistu
M2654SA (2.4 gig) drive. I have been having recurring problems with
corrupted directories. Here are some of the things I have encountered:
Publicly accessible format.dat files are wrong.
1) They often state that there are 2197 physical cylinders, there
are in *reality 2179
NOTE: # cyl = 2170
Alt = 2
Head = 21
Sect = 88
rpm = 5400
2) You *MUST change the jumper settings. This is not in the
manual.
a) jumpers #5+6 on cnh1 must be open
This is referred to on page 5 of the manual, and puts
synchronous mode data transfer request initiated by
host
b) jumpers #1+2 on cnh4 must be open
This is referred to on page 3 of the manual, and puts
power supplied by disk drive only (TERMPWR pin not
used)
FYI: There are no *automated answers for this drive on the Fujitsu
Tech help line. You must wait to talk to a tech. engineer
SEE BELOW FOR FULL INSTRUCTIONS?GUIDELINES FOR SETUP
SECOND COMMON PROBLEM:
Disks with no spin up -> all had been returned
THIRD PROBLEM:
Disks that format to 1.7Gb instead of 2.1Gb -> There is a suspicion
that perhaps the M2652 model may have slipped thru labeled as a 2654.
This has happened on a number of occasions. The 2652 is 2.1
UNformatted and formats to about 1.72GB.
They are really the same basic drive with the 2654 model having one
more platter and two more heads.
FOURTH PROBLEM:
Undefined failures were widely reported. Most drives were returned.
(THIS WAS REPORTED BY A SUN RESELLER). Many of the microcode patches
have failed.
*****SOLUTIONS*****
I believe I now have my M2654SA in working order. I did not follow the
instructions from Fast Access (See second solution) because they are
not for my machine/OS and also because of the personal communication
with Fujitsu. I tried many 'fixes' at once and cannot say what was at
fault (sorry about the lousy answer). I believe it was the jumper
settings, the terminator setting, and perhaps the partition table
(some funky numbers but, no overlaps). Nevertheless, I tried what is
listed below, reformatted my drive, added the newfs and no corruptions
yet. I have been fsck'ing every-other day -- just for grins :-) and
the obvious check.
FIRST:
FROM FUJITSU
NOTE: The required jumper settings as mentioned in my original posting
(see above) are also from a Fujitsu tech-support worker. Note the
discrepancies for CNH4 settings with those listed below.
Make sure you remove the internal terminator on the back of the drive
-- it's a passive termination and the Sparc-10 require external active
termination.
The jumper setting are: CNH1 5-6 Open (SDTR by INIT)
CNH4 1-2 Closed
3-4 Closed
SCSI ID# is 0
Other jumpers set to "as shipped".
Make sure that the total length of SCSI cable from Sun to the last
device is not over 6 feet.
Also, remove drive terminator, if the it is in the middle of the
string and there is only ONE terminator on the string for the drive at
the end of the string.
If your SCSI firmware is not 10O your are in rough shape and you must
call Fujitsu. One finds out which firmware version one has by typing
<format> and selecting the M2654SA; it will be the last entry. Note
that mine stated 0100.
SECOND:
FROM FAST ACCESS
NOTE: I DO NOT KNOW IF THEY HAVE INSTRUCTIONS FOR SPARC10's. I tried
many times to get them to send the document(s) -- without any
response. I found this unacceptable.
This was listed for OS4.1.1 and 4.1.2
Data Cylinders = 2170
Alternate Cylinders = 2
Physical Cylinders = 2179
Heads = 21
Sectors = 88
RPM = 5400
Jumpers:
CNH1 5-6 = open (sdtr by init)
CNH2 9-10 = open for sparcstations
CNH2 9-10 = closed for workstations
All other jumpers set to as shipped except for SCSI ID
