Sun Managers:

My original message went like this:

The answer to the question is NO, the GS will not work
with a 514 system.

Here are the replies.

Thanks goes to those that responded:

You will propably have to upgrade the GS, as the old GS won't fit into the
SS10's SBus slots. Why not upgrade the card to a ZX as well?

I believe the GS is a 3-slot card.
You won't be able to fit it into the 514 box.

SLot layout:

S S M top of box
S S M bottom of box

S := S-bus slot
M := M-bus slot

Your two M-Bus slots will be full of 2-processors each.
The GS looks like this:

--------
C C

The twoiprocessors modules look like this:

   -----
      C

The GS only uses two connectors, but uses space in the third
slot. The 2-processor modules use one connector, but two
slots. If you want to convert to a 512, it will work.

Of course, boards may come out with newer revs, that don't need
as many slots - buts that's luck.

To quote from various Sun announcements:

In other words, you can't just install yours. You could upgrade it, but you'd be better off upgrading to a ZX.

Again, buy a ZX. Better still, change your order to a SS10-ZX package; Sun's bundled package prices are always better than unbundled. Again, from the ZX announcement:

SPARCstation ZX and SPARCstation 10ZX

o SPARCstation ZX and SPARCstation 10ZX systems offer 310,000 triangle mesh/sec., 750,000 3-D vectors/sec., 125,000 quads/sec., and 450,000 antialiased 3-D vectors/sec., supporting fast rendering of complex 3-D models

o Advanced Sun-designed VLSI and packaging technology allows all the 3-D graphics functions to be included on a dual-wide SBus card, increasing reliability and leaving two SBus slots open on the SPARCstation 10ZX system

o SPARCstation 10ZX system offers multiprocessing capable systems to power intensive users who need the highest CPU performance available

o High-end graphics capabilities including Gouraud shading, per-pixel depth-cueing, line and point antialiasing with sub-pixel accuracy, hardware alpha-blend and screen door transparency, dynamically tessellated NURBS (non-uniform rational B-spline) in firmware and full stereo support, including the monitor, all of which insure more accurate, faster, and realistic representations of complex 3-D models

o Frame buffer features included 24-bit double buffer, 24-bit Z-buffer, 8-bit overlay, three 8-bit color lookup tables, multiple window IDs, fast clear planes, 1280 x 1024 @ 76Hz, 1152 x 900 @ 76Hz, 960 x 680 @ 112Hz and NTSC or PAL RGB video output, offering smooth, realistic animation in a variety of resolutions

o Compatible with Solaris 2.2 operating evironment, OpenWindows(TM) 3.1, XGL(TM) 3.0.1 software and SunPHIGS(TM) 3.0 software
