Regarding my original questions:

You'd better fsck that new filesystem, sounds like some inodes are
dangling...
One assumes that you formatted and newfs'd the new drive correctly,
before trying to use it.

i think you will need to run newfs again. you should follow that
w/a fsck...

this is a permissions error. ...try using the 'p' flag when
tarring the files back.
It turns out that this problem was one of those Hit-Your-Head-Against-
A-Brick-Wall-A-Couple-Of-Times situations.
I decided that rather than screwing anything up, I would have one of
Sun's engineers walk me through the process of configuring the drive
replacement that they had just installed.
I didn't notice that when I partitioned the drive, per his instructions,
I had overlapping partitions. I overlapped part of the user partition
with a swap partition.
I reformatted the drive and repartitioned it properly and everything
works fine now. Just goes to show, never do anything anyone tells you
to do (even if it's advice given under a maintenance contract) until
you have a full backup of everything.
Thanks to all the kind folks who responded and to those who tolerate my
insane, sometimes childishly simple questionnn

P.S. One word of surprised warning, however -- fsck saw the problem
but was unable to rectify it, nor was it able to tell me whence
the problem stemmed. Furthermore, format never complained when
I created the overlapping partitions!
