ORIGINAL QUESTION:
Is there anywhere one could telnet into to read usenet news? I'm not
talking about getting a CD and just reading, but perhaps asking
questions too. I would not use any disk space (except for my .rnrc or
whatever it is that keeps track of what you've read). Oh and by the
way, I could not pay for this either.
--------------
I have not tried anything yet, but I received a lot of good information
(as usual)
Thanks everyone!

Usenet news is not available at my site either, so I have to telnet to
read and post. There are two sites that I've used and are free and open
to the public:
launchpad.unc.edu (152.2.22.80) login as "launch".
Offers Usenet news via nn or rn, no shell access, but you can edit your
.newsrc from the menu. Posting access is allowed after you send in a
release form to them.
nyx.cs.du.edu (130.253.192.68) login as "new".
Requires sending in a signed, notarized release form for significant access. Shell access (I think you can choose between tcsh, bash, or ksh), nn, trn,
and tin. Also offers FTP.

You could build the reading/posting s/w and a popular transfer agent (nntp)
for at your site (I image you have a internet connection)....once built you
can connect to almost any site to read. sometimes universities will allow
you to read and post. ask around.

If you are on the internet, why don't you just get any of the NNTP news readers
and point it to the news server at the nearest university. It will do network
queries for the news, and you can run it on your own machine. If you can't
find a closer one, I use news.u.washington.edu.

Yes. telnet nyx.cs.du.edu.
Enter guest when it asks you to login and follow the menus.
You must validate but once you do its free and you get a full newsfeed.

Eh ? Making a CD and putting news on it is almost pointless.
nyx is free.

the secret is commonly found if you look via gopher for freely accessible
sites. one of them is via:
% gopher knot.queensu.ca 17502
the other are left as an exercise to the reader.
