Thanks so much to all listed below for their precious info's.
We don't have Windows NT at the moment but we are planning to test it soon.

We found a PD nfs out there that was unreliable. We've given up on that, so
we use ftp to transfer files from the real world to the wind-up world. :-)
I'm waiting for either Sun's PC-NFS for NT (in beta, but we don't have it yet)
or ftp Software's PC-FTP (same situation as PC-NFS.)

>From Steffen Reithermann - reitherm@informatik.uni-kl.de

at least the "March 1993 beta version of Windows NT" includes
only a telnet client and a ftp client program.

There are no telnet/ftp servers bundled currently.

NFS client and server programs will be a commercial package,
as far as I know.

Networking performance is fine -- but there is no NFS client software for NT.
I found a PD NFS server for NT (Soss NT) and built it. It seems to work
OK, but there doesn't seem to be a way to get the server software to
deal with permissions.

NT does come with telnet (client) and ftp (client and server). These seem
to work fine.

The primary performance bottleneck for networking in NT on PC based hardware
is the performance of the card. Some PC interface cards are really slow.

Using NT "straight from Microsoft's CD-ROM," I can do "ftp," "rcp,"
"rsh", and "telnet" from an NT machine to a Sun. There is no NFS
support. The NT machine can act as an FTP server if you
install/configure the FTP server software.

>From M. Seeger see@uebemc.siemens.de

it might not be exactly what you want, because i didn't use NT with Suns, but
with Dec-ultrix, but nethertheless it could be helpfull.

I played with NT for about a week in June, at Dec (they have a cooperation with
microsoft and had we actual versions of NT) so my knowledge is of this time.

You can do telnet and rlogins to unix-machines, or any other machine You can do telnet and rlogins to unix-machines, or any other machine
knowing telnet. Problem is, you can't do telnet from a unix-machine to the NT-ma
chine.
Where is now server-daemon.
NFS will be available by third party-vendors (tcp-based).
If you have the so called advanced server (in june only a beta release was avail
able),
you are abel to share files between NT-machines.
Performance of NT is not so good, at least on a 486-DX 66 on an alpha-PC perform
ance
is similar to what you get running a normal 486 with dos and windows :-)

>From Bill Shorter - bill@aloft.att.com

Windows NT offers TCP/IP services to the person logged
in at the PC's Console ONLY. The console user can telnet
out to remote hosts, as well as ftp out. Remote Sun
users cannot telnet/ftp into the NT PC. Also, there
is no NFS on generic NT.

It is left to third parties, who make lotsa dollars
doing this, to write and market bi-directional TCP/IP
based software, as well as NFS.

On the other hand, Solars 2.1 for x86 running on the
same PC (in my case a 66MHz 486) offers all SunOS
capabilities. AND it performs about as well as my
SPARCstation-2 running Solaris 2.1

I have just returned from a field assignment in Ireland and am getting up
to speed with NT (read: installing it this week).

> PS. Is there any Windows NT mail list out there?

I am not aware of one, although there is a windows/NT news group. If
you find an NT mailing list, let me know. We don't have News running,
but I am trying to justify the disk space (again - it 'died' in my
absence) to the powers that be at our site.

You will be able to do telnet and ftp from NT to Sun.

There is no NFS server that I know of at this time for NT.

Sun is evidently working on an NFS client for PC/NFS for NT, but it
isn't currently available.

You can't telnet from Sun to NT and I suspect you can't ftp either.
