SUMMARY - local mail delivery fails

And beating everyone else to the finish line was:
        K.Meehan@ma30.bull.com (Ken Meehan)

Who pointed me toward the sendmail.fc file that I had deleted
and made sure wouldn't come back the last time it happened, but did anyway.
I removed it again and restarted sendmail. Things seem to be working
now.

My thanks to Ken and all the others who have sent
suggestions that haven't arrived yet.

mail seems unable to deliver to local users on the server
of a small network here. (running SunOS 4.1.2)

The error message that appears in /var/adm/messages is of the form:
sendmail[9262]: AA09262: SYSERR: Who are you?: No such file or directory

And the message that gets sent to the postmaster is of this form:

> ---------- Forwarded message ----------
> Date: Mon, 16 Aug 93 02:31:13 EDT
> From: Mail Delivery Subsystem <BGSU-MAILER@dad.bgsu.edu>
> To: postmaster@andy.bgsu.edu
> Subject: Returned mail: User unknown

Clients that share the same /var/spool/mail directory can send mail.
I receive mail from other machines locally and from mailing lists,
so (based on my limited experience with mail) my assumption is that
this is a problem with binmail rather than sendmail.

If I telnet to the smtp port, 'EXPN' and VRFY commands give the proper
responses. (But it was already assumed this was a local problem.)
(Correction -- it isn't working now, although it was when I started
composing this it did work.)

And when I try to remake the aliases file (with sendmail -bi),
sendmail dumps core.

I put in the security patch to mail, but that was months ago, so it
isn't related. I can't think of anything I've done that might have
caused such a problem, but the power to mess things up on the machine
in question is something I share with others.
