Here's a rare occurance -- SunManagers struck out, but almost by accident
we found a workaround.
I was setting up an ethernet sniffer to grab the rmt stream, and while
testing the sniffer setup was giving rdump commands. I was shocked when
"dump -if hela:/dev/nrmt3h /dev/rsd0a" worked! But the full command with
density and length failed. A brute force test showed that any attempt to
specify a density on the tape (DEC 8mm, 2.3GB) caused a broken pipe. Didn't
matter what density you specified, the pipe broke immediately. So we
stopped specifying the density and lied about the tape length, and all
works fine.
Since we're doing a major OS upgrade on the both the Sun and the DEC
involved in the next month or so, we're not going to pursue it further
unless it still occurs after that.
