| Thanks in advance, I will post a summary.
The overwhelming consensus (and the correct answer! :-) was that
the problem is due to the LACK of a 'newline' at the end of the
mail file. For our particular case, this was due to the mailed
file being created in emacs (our vi guru is eating this up!),
which is prone to this behavior. A couple of people suggested
that the missing 'newline' could also be in the .signature file
(which is true, but not in this case).
Four of the respondents said that they were also seeing the same
messages, so I'm getting this summary out in short order.
