SUMMARY: getting papif to work

Well I ran into a number of problems. Not the least of which were:

1) Permissions:
The /var/spool/lpd/lw/fakedevice (or your equivalent dummy file)
needs to be writable by daemon. You can either chown fakedevice or
put a du#0 in the /etc/printcap.

2) Getting the if= script right. For a LaserWriter NTR for example,
it should invoke papif with the -k option, since DDP checksums don't
work right with this printer. -r is also a good option for those of
us without Transcript and thus psrev. Also PSTEXT should be set to
either a pstext-clone or nenscript-1.13++ to convert text files to
postscript first.

3) Following examples too literally:
For example the damn sample printcap files put #comments at the end
of each line. This cause all kinds of trouble until I removed them.
Now everything works just peachy.

Thanks to netters I got by eventually.
