Thanks to all those that responded ( I will enumerate you all). The basic
concensus is that a short
dump f - /pathname/filename | (cd target_dir; restore f - )
should do the trick (exact syntax may or may not be correct).
Thanks to all those who supplied or offered to supply code fragments as a
prototype. I would like the perl version if that person can take the time
to email it to me.
