Sorry for the delay in posting this.

Thanks to all who replied. The fastest response award actually goes to our local sun rep. 2 hours, the same one who told me not to use "noac" in the first place. He read my posting and called me straight away to say that the "noac" option was broken in SunOS 4.0.3 but had been fixed for SunOS 4.1 This was seconded by Calum Mackay:

I logged a fault call on this matter on Friday, and had the answer today.

This bug occured in SunOS 4.0.3, and was fixed for 4.1

noac is definitely safe to use, and is a must for /var/spool/mail mounts.

You ought to get onto your local Sun and complain about being given very
outdated advice.

I did complain when he rang me and explained the correct answer. It's a poor second calling me a week later. He did chase it through for me, but there should have been no need - the note about the fix should have been next to the note about the bug. (I know he is reading this)
