Just saw this thread; went through it recently -- here's my hack...
Potential problem identification welcome...

I set up the host to run NIS with itself as its own NIS domain (i.e.,
NIS domain = nyx.cs.du.edu; hostname = nyx; DNS domain = cs.du.edu).

Seems to be semi-happy.
