SUMMARY: Changing number of nfsd processes on the fly

First, my original query:

In comp.sys.sun.admin I write:

>In the search for better performance I'd like to change the number of
>nfsd daemons running on a system and observe system for a while. I
>know I can change how many start up at boot time by editing the
>rc.local file. Of cource, this means I have to reboot the system.
>What I would like to be able to do is to add more and/or take some away
>while the system is running. Is this even possible?

The concensus is that I should kill *all* the nfsd process before I can
start a new batch. I cannot add to those already running. Subtracting
from may be a case of killing existing nfsd daemons. But, as one
person warned, it may hang the system, or not all may die.

I did try this on my own workstation. The only caveat is that when the
last nfsd is killed the clients get an nfs server not responding until
you can fire up some new ones. I did not try it yet on out large
server (18 disks and over 16 gig of storage.) I can just imagine what
would happen if one lone nfsd daemon tried to satisfy all the
requests.

Thanks, and a tip of the hat to:
