Thanks to the many people who replied (too many to list). No thanks
to the many people who didn't reply but instead flamed me for asking
"this level of question". Yes, I did RTFM, and yes, I did check the group
file and it looked correct. However deleting the file and re-editing it
solved the problem.
In summary, if anyone is in the group 'wheel', only those users can
su root. In my case, I was in the group, but something else in the
file must have been corrupted.
