Thanks to: Charles Grady <Charles.Grady@eng.auburn.edu>
                Geert Jan <geertj@ica.philips.nl>
                frankm@shadow.cna.tek.com (Frank 'Scruff' Miller)
                <lokkur!chsun.chuug.ch!@iti.org:scs> (Steve Simmons)

for their responses. However, none of these turned out to be the problem.
What I failed to mention (because I didn't know it at the time) was that
we have a different controller: a Tapemaster 3000. This, of course, has
its own driver. We had this, and in fact the tapedrive would work for
tar, dump, etc, but mt couldn't recognize the tapedrive, so we couldn't
do things like fsf to get past one tar image to get at another one on the
same tape. Turns out this driver has _its own version_ of mt, called
mtop, which will do at least most of mt's functions. I have now built
that under 4.1.1, and all seems well.

PS. Below are the responses I got, in case they are instructive for someone

Make sure the kernal was config for a mag-tape drive.verify doing bootup you see xtc0 and xt0

Note: This is a meg-tape?

Have you tried the GENERIC kernel? a diskless kernel is
usually stipped and might not have the driver in it.

I would ensure that you have the drive in the conf for the kernel
(and the SCSI id is right) that you are ftpbooting over the net.

Check your kernel configuration very carefully -- the diskless kernel
for a 3/180 probably has no tape device driver. You can make a
pre-emptive test by running a generic kernel. I know several sites
running 3/180s with this drive.
