Thanks to all of those who replied. My problem was forgetting to supress
burst headers (i.e. :sh: ).
Included are all the replies I've received so far.

Sounds like everything is set up OK, at least physically.
At a guess, I would say that lpr is printing out header info that is causing
the QMS to think that the file is NOT postscript.
Try using lpr with the '-h' option (surpress header)(I think).
There is probably something you can add to printcap to accomplish the same
thing, but I tend to forget everything about printcap entries every
time I hack one together ...
Our QMS 820 runs fine from an SS1 using the following printcap entry:
#IMAGEN QMS-PS 820 Laser Printer
qms|lw:\
:lp=/dev/ttya:\
:br#19200:\
:ms=-parity,onlcr,ixon,decctlq:\

This is the printcap entry I use on a SS1+ to drive my QMS-PS810 :
llw|lp1|QMS PS-810 laser writer:\
:lp=/dev/ttyb:sd=/var/spool/llw:\
:lf=/var/log/llwlog:af=/var/adm/llw.acct:\

:of=/vol/local/lib.sun4/transcript/psof:\
:tf=/vol/local/lib.sun4/transcript/pstf:\
:gf=/vol/local/lib.sun4/transcript/psgf:\
:vf=/vol/local/lib.sun4/transcript/psvf:
You will notice that I drive my printer at 19200bps, I used to run at
9600bps and br#19200 was the only parameter I changed when I bumped up
the speed. If you do not have transcript you can remove the filter
lines.
Hope this helps,

Here's our printcap entry, but I think the REAL source of difficulty is
the lack of an End-Of-File coming from lpr. Our input filter (printcap's
if=/usr/local/lib/ps/psfilt.sh) tacks a Control-D onto the end of
the print job (among other things), which the QMS-810 has defined as
the EOF. Without it, the printer waits for a while without printing,
then times out and gives up.
Good luck.

I needed to change the NVram settings to set the baud and parity correctly. I remember having to have to set the printer to setting 0 wich was something like 1200baud and then I could cat a postscript file as described in the manual to set the default correctly.
Hope it helps.

Have you suppressed the burst page header? lpr will be attempting to cram a barrel full of non-postscript data (the burst page user info, job name, etc) down the throat of the QMS unless you tell it otherwise. To suppress the burst page, use the :sh: capability in the printcap entry for the printer (you can also suppress the header on a job-by-job basis by using the -h option on the lpr command).
