SLIP for Sun: SUMMARY

THE ORIGINAL QUESTION:
Does anyone have or have knowlege of Serial_Line_Internet_Protocol (SLIP) for
Sun 3 or 4 workstations. Does it exist, is it reliable, can I get it free,
can I get it immediately???

MY SUMMARY:

Apparently there has been some discussion of this subject before. From
what I see, there are three major categories to consider.
        
        1) SLIP
        2) CSLIP (compressed)
        3) PPP (compressed headers???)

Additional considerations are:

        Which version of SunOS ?
        Ancillary software to make automatic dialing etc. easier?
        Serial I/O support software (SunLink, uucp, tip, etc.).

Several sites were identified as having various combinations of versions and
support software. Here are the most often mentioned locations:

        ftp.uu.net:

Details for retrieving the various versions and users comments are given in
the "SUMMARY OF REPLIES" below:

I retrieved the SunOS 4.0 of SLIP version from ftp.uu.net and ran it
successfully on a SPARCstation1 from serial port A to serial port B with the
following cable configuration: (RS-232C 25-pin "D")

        TX 2 --> 3 RX
        RX 3 <-- 2 TX
        SGND 7 --- 7 SGND
        DCD 8 <-- 20 DTR
        DTR 20 --> 8 DCD

I was able to telnet from port A to port B and vice versa as described in
the README file included with the software.

I still am having trouble with running it on a Sun3/50 but haven't given up
yet. ("If there is nothing wrong with me, then there must be something wrong
with the Universe!" - Beverly Crusher -)

I have not studied all the various versions and techniques so don't quote me
about their meanings, purposes or properties. Please correct me if I have
spread false information.
