It took several inputs but finally an explanation and
fix were found.
The problem was that a certain mail message was sending sendmail
into hard loops with the only way out to kill the process.
the culprit was the <> on the front of the two line. i.e.
HTo: Harry Edmon
<>@atmos.washington.edu!harry%csusac.ecs.csus.edu<@dinl.den.mmc.com>
the fix is to edit the qf* file in /var/spool/mail/mqueue directory
and change the to line to:
HTo: harry@atmos.washington.edu
Now if someone can figure out why the <> causes sendmail to hang in a loop
we'll have the total fix.
