I want to set up the route to 11.0.0.0 network via remote host 12.1.1.1 and via qfe3 which is 10.1.1.1. But the `route get 11.11.11.11' shows that everything goes thru hme0 (which is 192.168.1.1). Question: How do I tell `route' to route the packets via particular interface pls? (ideally `route add -net 11.0.0.0 12.1.1.1 -dev(?) qfe3'). PS. 11.0.0.0 network is not reachable via arp via qfe3 and this is a problem. thanks a lot... Message-ID: <20011003100223.J2781@hyperion.jason.nl> I have an UE450, Sol 2.6 w/ a large external diskpack (450G logging metadavice ) as well as a couple of other disks. I needed to poweroff this machine (to add extra memory) so I gave the machine the poweroff command. The machine wne tthrough it's poweroff sequence, telling me that it was shutting down various processes, then it told me it couldn't do something to automount as automountd wasn;t running (which was starnge because automount certainly was running when I gave the poweroff command). The large extenral diskpack kept showing a *LOT* of activity, while nothing was happening anymore on the console, and then all of a sudden the UE450 powered off (while to my eyes it looked as if the diskpack was still writing data). I thought that poweroff (and halt) should unmount all disks before powering off/halting , as would shutdown. The man pages (for Sol 2.6) do not give me much clue . Does poweroff/halt indeed unmount all drives ? (the other drives on the system were cleanly unmounted according to the bootlog). If so, why was I still seeing diskactivity when the machine powered down ? What is the difference between halt, poweroff and shutdown ? I didn't get notice of this in the Sun Security Bulletins, or CERT. Dave Foster Sun(sm) Alert Notification Sun Alert ID: 27486 Synopsis: Buffer Overflow in "rpc.yppasswdd" Process Might Lead to Unauthorized Root Access Category: Security Product: Solaris BugIDs: 4456994 Avoidance: Patch, Workaround State: Resolved Date Released: 05-Jul-2001, 12-Sep-2001 Date Closed: 12-Sep-2001 Date Modified: 10-Aug-2001, 29-Aug-2001, 12-Sep-2001 1. Impact Remote users may be able to gain unauthorized root access to a NIS master server. 2. Contributing Factors This issue can occur in the following releases: SPARC Solaris 2.6 without patch 106303-03 Solaris 7 without patch 111590-02 Solaris 8 without patch 111596-02 Intel Solaris 2.6 without patch 106304-03 Solaris 7 without patch 111591-02 Solaris 8 without patch 111597-02 Note: Solaris 2.5 and 2.5.1 are not at risk. Only NIS master servers that have the "rpc.yppasswdd" process running are affected ("rpc.yppasswdd" will terminate when the described issue is exploited - with or without success; see the "Symptoms" section below.). 3. Symptoms There are two symptoms that might show the described problem has been exploited to gain unauthorized root access to a NIS master server (these symptoms may be concealed by an unauthorized root user): 1. The "rpc.yppasswdd" process is no longer running (this is because once the exploit completes, the "rpc.yppasswdd" process will exit). As a result, users will no longer be able to change their NIS password. The following command may be used to check if the "rpc.yppasswdd" process is still running: $ ps -ef | grep rpc.yppasswdd 2. A known exploit exists which, if successful, will start an additional "inted" process. The following command may be used to check for additional "inetd" processes: $ ps -ef | grep inetd An additional "inetd" process like in the following example output would indicate an ongoing intrusion: root 159 1 0 15:22:09 ? 0:00 /usr/sbin/inetd -s root 456 1 0 15:26:51 ? 0:00 /usr/sbin/inetd -s Here, "/usr/sbin/inetd -s " hints at an exploit of the described issue (on occurrence, "" will be the name of an arbitrary file). Once a NIS master server has been successfully attacked, it may be difficult to determine if the system has been compromised. The unauthorized root user may have cleaned up the system to avoid drawing attention to the exploit. 4. Relief/Workaround As possible workarounds 1. Stop the "rpc.yppasswdd" process. This will prevent the described exploit but also keep all users in the servers NIS domain from changing their NIS password. or 2. Enable "non-executable user program stacks" in the kernel by adding the following lines to the NIS servers "/etc/system" file (a subsequent reboot is required): set noexec_user_stack = 1 set noexec_user_stack_log = 1 and restart the "rpc.yppasswdd" process. This will prevent the current known exploit code from succeeding. Modified exploit code may still be created to bypass this limited protection. This workaround is only affective on sun4u, sun4m, and sun4d architectures (enter "uname -m" to display a systems architecture). This workaround will not work on Intel platforms. An attack against a system using workaround 2 will fail but still terminate the "rpc.yppasswdd" process, again preventing users from changing their NIS password until the "rpc.yppasswdd" is restarted. 5. Resolution This issue is addressed in the following releases: SPARC Solaris 2.6 with patch 106303-03 or later Solaris 7 with patch 111590-02 or later Solaris 8 with patch 111596-02 or later Intel Solaris 2.6 with patch 106304-03 or later Solaris 7 with patch 111591-02 or later Solaris 8 with patch 111597-02 or later Change History 10-Aug-2001 Patch 106303-03 (Solaris 2.6 SPARC) is available 29-Aug-2001 Patches 111590-02 (Solaris 7 SPARC) and 111596-02 (Solaris 8 SPARC) are available 12-Sep-2001 All patches are available State: Resolved << All opinions expressed are mine, not the University's >> =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= David Foster National Center for Microscopy and Imaging Research Programmer/Analyst University of California, San Diego dfoster at ucsd.edu Department of Neuroscience, Mail 0608 (858) 534-7968 http://ncmir.ucsd.edu/ =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= "The reasonable man adapts himself to the world; the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself. The answers: Yes, poweroff and halt sync and unmount the drives I was seeing diskactivity because the kernel waits for all diskacivity to stop before powering off. Most likely what I saw was the last disk being active and when that activity stopped the machine powered off. The difference between halt, poweroff and shutdown: poweroff is the same as halt, but it also powers off the machine Shutdown also runs the shutdown scripts (in rc0) to gracefully terminate all running processes (databases and other ncie things). This machine has handled mail for us for about 15 years now but..... The newer machine is Sol 2.6 and with either stock 8.8.8 sendmail or the Sun provided patched version mail is delivered OK locally i.e. mail sent on that machine either via sendmail or mail gets delivered to the /var/spool/mail/ directory. Mail from other clients seems to disappear i.e. the syslog entires say it has been accepted for delivery on the new machine, sendmail -v -q reports the new mail as locked, I then get a delivered entry in syslog, nothing left in /var/spool/mqueue but the mail has disappeared. I'm looking at 8.12 sendmail at the moment but since 8.8.8 worked OK on 4.1.3_U1 as a server and Sol 2.6 as client I wanted to proceed slowly rather than simply go for the latest. So, anybody else seen this with 2.6? Can't experiment too much during the week as the newer server is in use for other things so had to revert to the working configuration during Sunday. Mail configuration is a basic mail hub, NFS mounted /var/spool/mail to unix clients. Apart from the single 4.1.3_U1 machine all other unix clients are Sol 2.6, patched pretty well up to date, with some PC clients using popper, but I didn't get that far. The consensus is that it is not a problem. However, as Justin said: "if you've got a support contract, log a call. You'll probably have the cable in a few hours.' Here are the replies, thanks again to everyone: From: Carl Ma No problem at all! From: Michael Horton Per my conversation with Sun Support on this very subject. Any quality IDE cable can be used. The cables are not Ultra66/100 cables. Also, Sun uses the master-slave configuration pins on the disks to determine disk:a and disk:b. From: Justin Stringfellow if you've got a support contract, log a call. You'll probably have the cable in a few hours. >Any thoughts against using a generic IDE cable? None. My mind is clear of worries. From: sudheesh Today I installed an extra HDD in my Ultra-10. I saw the ide connector cable. My strong feeling is that the ordinary ide cable should work without any problem. But I haven't tried it. But before replacing the IDE connector cable just check the IDE HDD jumpers; whether the master/slave jumpers are configured properly. From: Benoit Audet At home I have an Ultra 10 and I allready put a standard "Fujitsu" ultra-dma IDE 6.4 gigs hard drive, that was previously in my PC. All works fine, so I guess that regular IDE cables would work just fine too in it. Well just try and you'll see! I've had different aspects of WinNT 4.0 (service pack 6a) *gracefully* reboot my system several times. I don't mean "crash." Rather, an orderly init 6 was run. (It's not exactly "orderly," since other apps are running and then killed, but it is an init 6--console messages indicate such. The SunPCI software is running as a normal user, not as root. In a couple of cases, the crash came from the NT User Manager, trying to put a non-admin user account into a group (any group--the shutdown starts as soon as I click the Groups icon). Similarly, after configuring the on-board ethernet card on the SunPCI via NT's Control Panel->Network app, the reboot of NT cause the overall system to reboot--again, an orderly init 6 reboot, not a panic/crash. Now, I could see a panic and crash of the system, but how in the world can this do an orderly init 6? -- Tim Evans | 5 Chestnut Court tkevans at tkevans.com | Owings Mills, MD 21117 http://www.tkevans.com/tkevans.html | (443) 394-3864 From sjl at leotel.co.uk Tue Oct 23 03:47:16 2001 From: sjl at leotel.co.uk (Stuart Little) Date: Tue, 23 Oct 2001 08:47:16 +0100 (BST) Subject: Changing NIS server to Sol 2.6 breaks automounter Message-ID: <200110230747.IAA20269@leotel.co.uk> Hi All, We have had a legacy 4.1.3_U1 system acting as our NIS master, tried to move master over to a 2.6 server and all the 2.6 clients failed to mount home and application directories. This turned out to be finger trouble. Original map from Sol1 server was auto.master. Although all Sol2 clients look for auto_master & worked OK from Sol1 server on going to Sol2 server I had modified the Sol2 NIS master to provide auto.master and auto_master maps just in case :-( Unfortunately a slip up in the Makefile meant I was using the wrong source file for the auto_master map, end result ypcat auto_master seemed OK but all the invalid entries had scrolled off my terminal and I was concentrating on the homes and app mount maps, which looked fine via ypcat and ypwhich -m. Fixed the Makefile and all was well and then reverted to auto.master alone just to prove the point. Apparently NIS+ doesn't like the '.' in auto.master so Sol2 used auto_master instead. I'm unlikely to use NIS+ so I'll stick with our original names. Basically I'm sharing off /export/home as /home to each of the servers (mounted with the automounter). VCS comes with a bundled NFS server and share agent, which works great: I can fail the disk, mount and share to any server and ensure that a NFS daemon will start up if it isn't there already. The problem is that when the disk fails over to another server, all of the clients/users logged in run into a "NFS: stale file handle" problem. If I restart the nfs client it will connect to the new server (through the floating IP which follows the disk), then things seem to be ok. I was wondering: has anyone used VCS + NFS agent to provide some sort of a HA NFS share solution? If not, how do people handle failing over NFS servers?? Is there a way to pass the locking info to another server? My experience with NFS is minimal, but I'd love to know how people deal with this. Thanks in advance. Apart from the single 4.1.3_U1 machine all other unix > clients are Sol 2.6, patched pretty well up to date, with some PC > clients using popper, but I didn't get that far. OK, on second attempt I had gone to sendmail 8.11.6 with an m4 generated cf file. Mail from clients upgraded to 8.11.6 with a client m4 generated cf file worked OK, mail from 4.1.3_U1 and Sol 2.4 clients using 8.8.8 still failed, so a better situation than first attempt. I was getting the "config error: mail loops back to me (MX problem?)" error message but couldn't see a problem with our DNS setup. Final answer was a configuration problem, my original, touched as little as possible, client cf files were setting $j to domainname, rather than host.domainname. Although OK with 8.8.8, 8.11.6 server barfed on this. Kudos to Neil W Rickert for getting it spot on and thanks also Gaziz Nugmanov Rich Kulawiec "Martin Carpenter" Basically I have been modifying generated by-hand .cf files for server and clients some years now as and when our mail routing grew more complicated. This was the first time I had bothered to use m4 generated cf files. Since the error was reported as a config error from the hub server I was misled into looking at MX config etc on the server rather than an error in my older client cf file. Should have learnt a lesson long ago that playing with sendmail configs by hand is _not_ the way to go. Message-ID: <004801c14b7a$8e440400$07c57ad5@mahabir> Hey all, I have 22 x 36GB (Total 792 GB) disks in a Sun StorEDGE A5200 Array, fibre connections. I'd like to know how what the easiest and quickest way is to set these disks up as a RAID5 set on an E4500 running Solaris 2.6. Playing around with Veritas Volume Manager, and accepting the defaults for a RAID-5 volume, the max I can get out of the array is ~474 GB?! Maybe I am doing something wrong, is there something special I must do? Has anybody done this effectively using Disksuite or Storedge Component Manager? I can't see any way to arrange my disks into a RAID set via the latter easily, only monitor the disks separately. 'Format' shows up all the disks separately. If anybody can talk me through the various steps I'd be very grateful, or just to share comments and experiences. I will of course summarise. BTW many thanks to those who responded to my last query after I summarised about connecting to my E4500 via a serial connection. Increasing this to 7 meant I could get 630GB, more like what I expected. As many of you pointed out though, RAID 5 writes are very poor, might have to consider another config! I will also be trying the different software suggested - many thanks again. The most appropriate answer was from Stan :- "One thing I noticed when I had a few empty disks to play with in Veritas Volume Manager: The usable space in a RAID-5 volume varies with the number of columns. I don't remember the exact numbers, but 4 columns had a 33% overhead (100 gb of space used 133 gb of disk), 3 columns (VVM default IIRC) had a 25% overhead, 5 columns 22%, and gradually decreasing with an increasing number of columns. The exact numbers are from memory (and reality may differ from my memory), but I recall the worst being 4 columns, with 3 a little better, and 5 better yet. Another black hole for disk space is a spare disk... Yes, you really do want to set up a spare disk.... Did VVM set up more than 1 spare disk by default? Does VVM see all 22 disks, and are they all in the same disk group?" > -----Original Message----- > Sent: Tuesday, October 02, 2001 3:35 PM > Hey all, > > I have 22 x 36GB (Total 792 GB) disks in a Sun StorEDGE A5200 Array, fibre > connections. Hi,
I got this strange problem yday.
I checked ulimit of my machine and got "max = user=20 processes" as 100.
This explained why my application could not=20 run.
I increased "max user processes" to 1800 by = "ulimit=20 -u".
But I want it to set to 1800 permanently. There are = ways like=20 adding "ulimit -u 1800" in .bashrc.
I searched in the system where exactly this = configuration=20 number is stored so that i can  change=20 there.
But could not find it.
So please let me know where all system configuration = parameters are stored in solaris, especially those in = (ulimit)

Thanks,
Ashish

I successfully loaded the driver off the CD (ver 1.1, rev 2.0.24) and updated it with the latest patch available on Sunsolve. The /kernel/drv/vge driver is created; however, /dev/vge is not created, even after a reconfigure boot. Also tried creating it with devfsadm, but that also failed. prtconf lists the device and states "driver not attached". Of course, I'm not able to plumb the interface, since there is no device created. I do have a solid green link light on the card and switch. I know this card works, as it was being used in a different system, although one running Solaris 2.6. I found a reference on a google search to someone using this card with Solaris 8, but haven't found any specifics on problems similar to what I'm experiencing here. I have a question regarding 8mm tape drives:

We have a Sun Ultra 1 (node X), with an EXB-8505 drive attached. When we try to read a tape written on an IBM-8505 (SEG-Y format), the read fails. However, we have another Ultra 1 (node Y), with an EXB-8500 which is able to read the tape.

Moving the EXB-8500 to X still results in a read failure. The st.conf is exactly the same on each machine as I've copied it from Y to X.

We believe the SCSI card is OK because we can tar to (and from) both tape drives on X.

Both machines are running Solaris 2.6 and Y has only 5 patches not appearing on X:

105181-10: A kernel security revision

105181-19: A kernel security revision

105363-16: Elite 3D patch

105633-46: openwindows 3.6 Xsun patch

105795-05: hme patch.

Any ideas will be greatly appreciated. I will summerise.

Thanks, Simon

All,

I'm looking to put in place a recovery = tape for our new Solaris server. I've just spoken to Sun and they say = there is no concept of a recovery tape on Solaris as you are able to = boot into a mini o/s from installation CD that allows you to recover a = server.

On AIX 'mksysb' writes a boot image to = tape for recovery purposes, then 'savevg' writes each volume group onto = the same tape.

How are people creating recovery tapes = on Solaris  - are you just taking ufsdumps of the partitions = ?

I'd be interested in hearing people's = strategies.
