Original message at the end of this post. Sorry for being so slow to post the summary. In any event, it turns out that the Oracle 11.2 installer has patch 124861-15 (or higher) hard coded. I knew the SPRO previx was SunStudio stuff, but v12.2 has renamed the packages, so the installer won't work with that version. I installed v12.0 and all was cool. As usual, this list provided lots of help. Thanks to all.
