Subject: rsync failing

On 2 systems running Solaris 9 , one system remote, we are starting to get
the following error on the remote system with rsync

You have no controlling tty. Cannot read passphrase.
rsync: connection unexpectedly closed (0 bytes read so far)
rsync error: error in rsync protocol data stream (code 12) at io.c(342)

I did a google and found some references to tty being wrong permissions and
checked that and it is at 666. Checked the keys ( ssh ) and they have not
been altered. Rsync has been working for several months and this error just
started.

Nothing supposedly has changed. The connection between the remote and local
is a via a vpn connection on our corporate net.

Any help or pointers is appreciated
