[SUMMARY] How to update disk firmware on system disk?

Well, this was pretty stupid, sorry for the noise. I had
previously been given the recommendation to boot from CD and
then put in CD with firmware patch on it, I wanted to verify
if this would work.

Consensus is it won't, system will probably panic during firmware
update which is a Bad Thing.

Better to just boot from CD and then either:

1. Bring up network interface and NFS-mount partition with firmware
update on it or ftp/scp the update into /tmp; or

2. Boot from CD, insert CD containing update and copy it into
/tmp (essentially into RAM), then reinsert OS CD. This way
OS CD is available during update. [I'm still paranoid about
there being some kind of panic...I'll avoid this one.]

Of course one could always put in an extra internal disk with the
update on it.

Thanks so much for all the out-of-office replies. Really folks, if
it were up to me such replies would result in being bounced from
the list. Congratulations to the following who were lucky enough
to not be in their office:

Gustavo Tobares
Wilmot, Doug
