SUMMARY removing external scsi device without reboot

Hello my original post is at the end.

Firstly thank you for all your answers.

The overwhelming concensus is that this procedure is
ok. We have all seen a scsi cable come out of the back
of a Sun machine and not hesitated to plug it back in
I guess. A couple of caveats were to make sure that
that this was not the terminating device in the chain.
Since the was the external SE connector this was the
only device haning off of the channel in my case. One
should make sure that the device is powered on before
pluging it into another system and to make sure that
in  a hot plug like this that you make the connection
flush the first time with little fiddling as this
could really disturb a system Also make sure that the
scsi chain is rather quiescent during this operation.
Of course there is some risk in doing this operation
but I believe it is slim. This is of course is not to
be considered a "best practice" by any mean but there
is a time and a  place when you are in a pickle and
this will do.

PS what do we need to do to educate people about
autoresponders to a professional mailing list? A
systems admin mailing list no less.
