Folks -

Thanks to Waqar Hafiz who even took the trouble to dig out
the answer on SunSolve for me (I looked but didn't see it
-- his search terms are better).

Our /etc/inetd.conf file was fine, but that patch was missing.
Installing it fixed the problems ...

> Most likely, the following line in /etc/inetd.conf has been commented out:
> smserverd to support removable media devices
> 100155/1 tli rpc/ticotsord wait root /usr/lib/smedia/rpc.smserverd
> rpc.smserverd
> If so, edit /etc/inetd.conf and remove the comment, then execute the
> following commands:
> # ps -ef | grep inetd # kill -HUP <pid of inetd>
> Now, the media should mount automatically.
> Also, please ensure that patch 112966-01 (or higher) is installed.
> Keywords: Solaris 9, smserverd, security, inetd.conf, vold, mount
