Thanks to all who suggested downloading binutils from sunfreeware. Apache
compiled with no problems after installing it.

I've had very similar errors (can't remember the exact errors) with
everything i've tried to compile on it. Right now, I'm trying to compile
apache-1.3.22. I got these errors right out of the box so I re-installed
Solaris 8. Same problems.

Below are the error messages and some system info.

/usr/ccs/bin/as: "/var/tmp/ccZrUW5E.s", line 3318: error: unknown opcode
/usr/ccs/bin/as: "/var/tmp/ccZrUW5E.s", line 3318: error: statement syntax
/usr/ccs/bin/as: "/var/tmp/ccZrUW5E.s", line 3442: error: unknown opcode

i have compiled several things on our netra X1, so it must be some problem
with your '/usr/ccs/bin/as' binary.

	# uname -a
	SunOS www1 5.8 Generic_108528-10 sun4u sparc SUNW,UltraAX-i2

	# ls -l /usr/ccs/bin/as
	-rwxr-xr-x 1 bin bin 355348 Aug 19 1999

i'm using the following version of 'gcc' to compile.

	# gcc -v
	Reading specs from
	gcc version 2.95.3 20010315 (release)
