Thanks to the list and other sources, I have it working. Here is the
original problem.

To backup an NFS system (from a Network Appliances filer) to a local
tape drive, which command is better, for one, and for another, why was I
getting error messages of permission denied etc.?

Cut from original message ---

>SunOS xxxxxxx 5.6 Generic_105181-19 sun4u sparc SUNW,Ultra-5_10
>I have 2 tape drives on this system, /dev/rst5 and /dev/rst4. I have
>mounted an NFS mount from a remote server onto this one, as such:
># mount xxxxx:/xxxxxC/Homes /mnt/hm
>It mounted fine.
>Then I issued the following command:
># tar cvf /dev/nrst5 /mnt/hm/fidohome
>tar: /dev/nrst5: Permission denied
>So then I tried:
>#ufsdump -0uf /dev/nrst5 /mnt/hm/fidohome
>ufsdump -0uf /dev/nrst5 /mnt/hm/fidohome
> DUMP: `/mnt/hm/fidohome' is not on a locally mounted filesystem
> DUMP: The ENTIRE dump is aborted.
 End of Cut ---

So I figured out I had to log into the network appliances box and then
issue a remote dump command as such:

dump 0fb xxxA:/dev/rmt/0cb 63 /xxxB/Homes/fido

where xxxA is the Solaris box with the tape drive, xxxB is the Network
Appliance filer with the homes.

Best regards.
