SUMMARY: CDE Login redirection to another X server

As it turns out, eXceed has the ability built right in. Never did get
thoroughly versed in X server concepts. For those who have eXceed, run
eXceed (XDMCP-Broadcast) from eXceed's Start/program menu. For those who
don't have eXceed, it seems some further information was graciously
provided by some people:

Thanks to all that replied:

Use the XDMCP on your eXceed and choose the system
you want the CDE login from.

You want to use the XDMCP protocol, which Exceed supports. When you start
Exceed, start it via the XDMCP option. You should be able to select the ip
address of the machine you want to connect to, or it might give you a list
of available machines.

Open up Xconfig on your PC running
eXceed

Click on Communications
Choose XDMCP-query
Click on configure
Put in host name of the unix machine u want to
send CDE output of in connect host

Click ok
Good to go

The quick solution was to not do it the way I wanted to, and use XDM instead. It looks like broadcast will work best on my domain.

>From Reggie Stuart:

If CDE is running on the Solaris machine (already running dtlogin), you just need to fire up Xconfig. Click on "communications", and set the mode to XDMCP-query or XDMCP-broadcast. If you select query, click on "configure" and type in the hostname you want to attach. If you select broadcast, when you actually start the Exceed x-server, it will generate a list of all the servers available running X so you can login. Once that's done, starting up the red X should take you to a screen that looks like you are at the machines console, failsafe login and all.

Meenakshisundaram Paramasivam (Sundar) had helpful info on how to run olwm. (Below) If you are on a Sun machine, type: olwm & (or /usr/openwin/bin/olwm &) If you are on a HP machine, type: mwm & (or /usr/bin/X11/mwm &) If you are on a SGI machine, type: 4Dwm & (or /usr/bin/X11/4Dwm &)

******************* I still would like to find out what the window manager for CDE is, but the XDM thing works pretty well.

Original message: I'm looking to do something similar to Nabeel, but want to run CDE so it'll display on my NT exceed server. I'm not sure what the window manager is on Solaris 8 (or any Solaris) is, though. On linux I do something like "/usr/X11R6/bin/fvwm2 -display machine.name:0" with rsh and the exceed Xstart tool. What is the window manager (or what I need to execute) on the Solaris 8 workstation to do the same thing?

-- Andrew Diederich andrew@netdelivery.com ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "Tim Conrad" <tconrad@newyork.edisonproject.com> you can set your DISPLAY, and then run /usr/dt/bin/Xsession

although I doubt that's what you're really looking for.

And, besides, it's reeaaaallllyyyyyyy slloooowwww.

Tim ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- John Williams <jwilliams@jhubc.it> Steve,

I think that if you configure your Xserver to connect to the remote host using XDMCP (rather than rexec, rlogin, or rsh), you should see the login screen come up.

SuperX does this (eval copy from http://www.frontiertech.com), so it may be a choice on eXceed.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "Stuart, Reggie (GXS, Maxim)" <Reggie.Stuart@gxs.ge.com> If CDE is running on the Solaris machine (already running dtlogin), you just need to fire up Xconfig. Click on "communications", and set the mode to XDMCP-query or XDMCP-broadcast. If you select query, click on "configure" and type in the hostname you want to attach. -Reggie ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "Cetera, Tony" <Tony.Cetera@medec.com> If you use xconfig to put exceed into broadcast mode (under xconfig --> communication) and set your exceed display to single (xconfig --> screen definition), you will get a list of all hosts broadcasting out a dtlogin. If you are behind a router, you will need to set up an xdmcp.txt file (xconfig --> communication --> configure) to direct your dtlogin request.
