I hope everyone will forgive me for sending a summary without asking a
question; I stumbled upon something I believe many people on the list will
be interested in. In my time as a subscriber to sun-managers, I have
noticed that there are a good number of questions posted to the list
relating to performance, tuning, and / or kernel parameters. It's
certainly an area of interest of mine (notice I said interest, not
Therefore I was quite intrigued to see a link on Sun's BigAdmin
website to a new manual on docs.sun.com - the "Solaris Tunable Parameters
Reference Manual." I immediately downloaded the PDF version of the manual.
It is an excellent and long overdue (IMHO, of course) manual from Sun.
It appears to be complete, touching on all the tunable kernel
parameters. For each parameter, it provides a description, the default
value, the valid range, whether it can be changed on the fly, and when to
change it, amongst other things. It also appears to be up to date, since
the revision history states that the current version of the manual applies
to the "Solaris 8 10/00 release" (but also includes an appendix on "Tunable
Parameter Change History" - great feature!).
Anyway, I won't make this post any longer than it already is. If
you're interested, go to docs.sun.com and download it. If you're not, my
apologies for wasting your time. Personally, I've been waiting for years
for this manual. I believe I'm not the only one who'd be interested in
knowing about it...
